A 20-year-old Guyana Police Force constable has been placed under close arrest following allegations that confidential surveillance footage was exchanged for GY$800,000 in cash.

The Guyana Police Force said investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters arrested the constable on Monday, October 26, 2026, after receiving intelligence about the alleged unauthorised disclosure of footage connected to a shooting incident involving Senior Superintendent Prem Narine.

According to the police account, the constable was stationed at the Force’s Command Centre and allegedly downloaded the surveillance recording while on duty on Friday, October 23. Investigators say the footage was transferred to a flash drive and subsequently handed over to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed in exchange for the reported payment on October 24.

The footage became public after Mohamed presented it at a press conference on October 26, disputing aspects of the police account of the earlier shooting incident. The video’s release has since triggered a separate investigation into how the recording was obtained and whether confidential police material was improperly disclosed.

Police say detectives are working to recover the money and are continuing their investigation into possible offences. The constable remains under arrest, and the allegations surrounding the reported payment have not been determined by a court.

The case raises serious questions about the handling of confidential police surveillance material and accountability within law-enforcement agencies. Further information is expected as investigators pursue the matter.
