PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti Haiti has announced a revised timetable for long-delayed general elections, with the first round scheduled for July 18, 2027, as authorities face continued pressure to restore democratic governance amid persistent insecurity.

According to the country’s Provisional Electoral Council, the second round of voting is scheduled for October 4, 2027. The council also expects to publish the final list of candidates by mid-January, while voter registration is scheduled to close on May 20, 2027.

The announcement marks another important development in Haiti’s political transition. The country has been without an elected president since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, while violence and instability have repeatedly disrupted efforts to organize national elections.

The initial election round had been scheduled for December 2026 but was postponed as security concerns continued to affect preparations.

The key challenge will be ensuring that elections can take place safely, transparently and with broad public participation. Political stability, voter access and the ability of electoral officials to operate across the country will remain central issues as Haiti moves toward the revised schedule.

The new timetable offers a clearer target for election preparations, but delivering a credible vote will depend heavily on improvements in security and the country's capacity to support a democratic transition.
