Puerto Rico’s retail sector is showing continued momentum after retail sales surpassed $52 billion during Fiscal Year 2026, according to the latest figures from the island’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce.

Retail sales reached approximately $52.16 billion between July 2025 and June 2026, representing a 1.2% increase compared with the previous fiscal year. June alone generated about $4.46 billion in sales, up 4% from the same month a year earlier.

The latest figures point to particularly strong activity among small businesses, whose June sales increased 2.1% year over year. During the full fiscal year, small-business sales rose 4.8% to approximately $12.47 billion.

Several retail categories recorded notable June gains, including hardware and home-improvement stores, motor vehicle dealers, gas stations and convenience stores, and sporting and entertainment-related retailers.

However, the results were uneven. Medium-sized businesses experienced a decline in sales, highlighting the different pressures facing Puerto Rico’s retail market.

The retail sector remains a major part of the island’s economy, supporting approximately 132,700 salaried jobs during Fiscal Year 2026. The latest numbers could provide a boost for Puerto Rico’s local business community as retailers prepare for the final months of the year.
