Guadeloupe is moving to strengthen support for older and vulnerable residents through new medical-social care capacity announced by the Regional Health Agency (ARS).

The ARS Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy published an August 5 call for applications concerning the creation of 12 temporary emergency accommodation places for older people who are frail or dependent in Guadeloupe.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to adapt Guadeloupe’s medical-social services to changing population needs. The health authority has also launched related initiatives involving mobile teams focused on preventing loss of independence among older people in nursing homes and at home.

The move is particularly relevant as Guadeloupe faces an ageing population, rising chronic disease needs and unequal access to healthcare, according to Santé publique France.

Expanding temporary care options could help families manage urgent situations while supporting older residents who need additional assistance.

The latest initiative adds to wider changes in Guadeloupe’s healthcare system, including the opening of the new University Hospital, which began receiving its first patients in April 2026 and includes modern medical-imaging facilities.
