Guyana has been crowned overall champion at the 2026 Inter-Guiana Games, ending a 12-year wait for the regional sporting title after a powerful performance in Paramaribo, Suriname.
The Guyanese delegation finished the competition with 475 points, edging French Guiana, which scored 444 points, while host nation Suriname placed third with 431. The result marks Guyana’s first overall championship at the Games since 2014.
Track and field proved decisive, with Guyanese athletes collecting an impressive 334 points to establish a commanding lead in the overall standings. The team also dominated men’s futsal, defeating both Suriname and French Guiana to finish the discipline with nine points.
Suriname was particularly strong in swimming, collecting 288 points across the men’s and women’s events. The hosts also excelled in chess and volleyball, while French Guiana performed strongly in basketball. However, Guyana’s athletics dominance proved too much for its regional rivals to overcome.
The victory is a major achievement for Guyana’s student athletes and coaches following last year’s second-place finish on home soil. It also highlights the value of investment in youth sport and multi-discipline competition across the region.
The Games bring together young athletes from Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, helping build regional sporting relationships and give competitors valuable international experience.
Guyana’s return to the top of the Inter-Guiana Games is a significant boost for national sports, with French Guiana set to host the next edition in 2027.
