Puerto Rico is emerging as a potential Caribbean leader in 5G technology, with adoption projected to reach 85% of mobile connections by 2030.

A new GSMA forecast estimates that Puerto Rico could have approximately 3.2 million 5G connections by 2030, placing the island ahead of other major Caribbean markets. Across the region, 5G adoption is projected to increase from 10% of mobile connections in 2025 to 23% by 2030.

The expansion could create opportunities for businesses, cloud services, smart technologies, digital commerce and connected industries, while increasing demand for telecommunications infrastructure.

GSMA also projects that mobile operators will invest billions of dollars across the Caribbean through 2030, although additional investment will be needed to expand coverage and close connectivity gaps.

For Puerto Rico, stronger 5G infrastructure could support the island’s growing digital economy and technology sector, giving companies faster and more reliable connectivity for advanced applications.

The forecast puts Puerto Rico in a strong position to become a regional 5G technology hub, but continued infrastructure investment will be critical to turning the projection into sustained digital growth.
