A 73-year-old woman has died following an early-morning house fire in Crab Hill, St Lucy, leaving her family and community in mourning.

The deceased was identified as Janice Straker, who was inside the family home at Number One, Crab Hill, when the fire broke out on Thursday, October 15. Three of her grandchildren who were also inside the house managed to escape.

Her husband, Richard Straker, reportedly returned home shortly before 7 a.m. and found the house engulfed in flames. He attempted to enter the burning building to reach his wife but was forced back by intense smoke and fire.

Neighbours rushed to help, with some using water hoses while others tried to gain access to the home. Resident Dwayne Griffith was among those who attempted to assist and reportedly received treatment for smoke inhalation.

St Lucy MP Peter Phillips visited the scene and described the incident as a tragedy for the family and wider community. He said social services personnel had visited to assess the immediate needs of displaced family members. He also renewed calls for emergency accommodation in northern Barbados to help families affected by fires and other disasters remain close to their communities.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and further details may emerge as the investigation continues.

The tragedy has renewed attention on fire safety, emergency response and the support available to families displaced by sudden disasters in Barbados.
